さて今日の英語トレーニングのメモ残しておきたいと思います。
まず発音、苦手だなぁ。"Hot" は日本人の多くがホットって言っちゃうのだけど「ハァット」なんですってね。これは直せそう。bought, caught, taught も同じでちょっと難しい。そして、Z の発音はゼットでなくて「ジー」ですが、これもG との区別が難しいですね。携帯とかアラームの Buzz の音「ジジジ」がZの音と考えると良いみたいです。
今日はミーティング関係のフレーズについて学びました。
まず、ミーティングに参加するのは Join, Attend そして go to a meeting などあるけど、欠席する場合に be absent という表現はあっても、それ以外の馴染みのある動詞はないですか？と聞いたら、あるにはあるけど、I'm going to be absent .. か、それから出席の逆だから、I can't go to the meeting. とか I can't join/attend/make the meeting. で良いとの回答でした。おー、確かにそれはいいね。
それから、ミーティングの流れを変えて発言しなければいけないとき、If I can add something... と切り出すと聞いてもらえるかもとアドバイスをもらいました。あと、下の３つの表現を、
- backtrack (動詞、前のトピックに戻る。go backでも良い）
- get sidetracked (話を横道にそらす。頻繁に使うと嫌われるかも)
- jump ahead (先に飛ばす）
以下のフレーズで始めると良いとのことでした。特に申し訳ないと思ったときには、あとの2つを使うべしとのこと。
- If I can...
- I don't mean to ...
- Not to ...
それから以下のVocaburary を学びました。１枚のシートをもらったのですが、すべて初めての表現。勉強しがいがあるというか何というか。。。
1) goner: n.) someone in a lot of trouble
ゴナー
I'm stumped. ともいえる。Stumped は木が切られて切り株の状態になるようなことらしい。
When his father sees his bad grades, he'll be in trouble. ここで、he'll be a goner. と言える。
I didn't study for that exam, and my futhure depends on it. I'm a goner.
2) bomb: v. ) fail, be unsuccessful
ぼむ、って発音しにくい。
Everyone thought the play would be good, but it was terrible. ここで it was bomb. と言う。
We wnt to see that new play, but nobody likes it. It bombed. アルクで調べると爆弾に被爆したことになるのだけど、まいっか。
3) go over big: v. be very successful
He mentioned some new ideas at the meeting and everyone liked them. ここで they went ovre big. と言える
She made a delicious meal for dinner. It went over big.
4) go up in smoke: v.) disappear, fail to materialize
He was going to Europe, but his father got sick. His plans went up in smoke.
5) from left field: adv.)unexpectedly; with an odd or unclear connection to the subject
野球の左外野の方にはあまり球が飛ばないから（そうかなー）
I asked her for advice, but her ideas were unrelated to my problems. は her ideas were from left field.
6) square one: n.) the beginning.
ケンケンパーの最初に入る四角が由来とのこと。1塁のことではないのか。嘘でもそう教えてもらった方が覚えやすいね。
Despite all my research, I need a new subject. I'm back to square one.
Every time I try to assemble this toy, it's wrong. I keep going back to the square one.
7) ballpark figure: n.) approximate amount
野球の打率で、3割何分何厘まで言わなくても3割1分とか大体の数字でOKというところからきているらしい。
How much does it cost to build a house? Give me a ballpark figure.
I'm not sure how much a new car would cost. Give me an estimate. (a ballpack figure と言い換えられる)
8) back to the drawing board: adv.) ready to start over, refine or rething an idea
The boss wants new sales plans, so he sent us back to the drawing board.
This speech is not as good as it should be. I'll have to go to work on it some more (go to back to the drawing board).
これらを覚えたら次のような会話ができるはず。
A: I'm a goner. My new project bombed.
B: I thought it would go over big with the boss. Why did it go up in smoke?
A: A problem arose from left field, and now I'm back to square one.
B: How much will it cost now? Can you give me a ballpark figure?
A: I won't know for another week. Meantime, I have to get back to the drawing board.
で、そのあと、Name Matching Game をしました。結構、重要かも。たとえば、マイクロソフトの元社長は Bill Gates ですが、本当は Bill はニックネームで William が本名みたいな。自分はてっきり、Middle Name かと思ってましたが違うんですね。
さて下が問題。対応するものに線を引いてみましょう。みたいな。

Elizabeth Chuck
Henry Betsy
難しいですよねー、Henry とCharlie しかわからなかった。Henry は Hank です。Charlie は Chuck です。両方とも同じアルファベット から始まるので。
Amanda は Mandy となるらしいです。
Robert は Bobby 、ほかに Rob, Robby, Bob とも呼ばれるらしいです。
Richard は Dick、ほかに Rick, Rich, Richy, Ricky など。
Elizabeth は Betsy、ほかに Beth, Liz, Betthy, Lizzy など。
あと、なぜか価格の話になって、Expensive を別の表現で Pricey とも言うという話で、名詞に Y をつけて形容詞にすることは多いみたい。spicy, salty, rainy, roomy, spacy などなど。Inexpensive は cheap という形容詞があるので Y バージョンはない。また、Expensive と Inexpensive の間は忘れがちかもしれないが、affordable とか reasnable というのが一般的。
最後に、帰りの挨拶をしているときに、Last weekend とか next weekend とだけいうと混乱するなと思った場合は、this last weekend とか this next weekend とかいうとベターと教えてくれました。
本当に最初から最後まで、濃い授業でした。
