今週は結局、車の修理どころか、見積もりさえ取れなかった。
トヨタに持っていったのだけど、ボディの修理はしないと言われ、日本との違いを感じました。分業制なんですねぇ。
そのあと、会社の近くの修理屋さんに持っていったけど $400 くらいで直せると言ってくれたのですが、紙の見積もり書は出せないとのことで、Ｙこさんに紹介してもらったボディショップに行こうと思っていたのですが、仕事が忙しくなり、いけなかった。
英語トレーニングでは、先週に引き続き、先生が車に関する英語を教えてくれました。
事故の相手方のことを、The person/party at fault といってた。あ、これは、相手方が100％悪いときに使えるのだけど。
事故にあったというのは I got in an accident. とか I got in a fender-bender. とか My car got smacked into. など、got を使うといいそうな。
で、Ｖｏｃａｂｕｒａｒｙです。
- backseat driver
n.) passenger who tells ou how to drive
ただし、どちらかというと口うるさく言う人。後ろの席で運転する人というのはユーモアのある表現ですね。
協力的な人には co-pilot というべき。
My friend tell me how to drive. He's a backseat driver. Don't be a backseat driver.
さすが車社会で、ミーティングのときにも使うことがあるようです。I don't mean to be a backsheet driver. というと、おせっかいのようですが。。。みたいな意味になるらしい。
- road hog
n.) person who takes too much room on the road.
Hog はやりすぎること。Hogs a remote control というとＴＶのリモコンをずっと囲んで使う人。とてもよく使う表現とのことです。
He drives all over the road. He's a road hog.
ミーティングのときにも Who hog the follor? He keeps hagging the floor. というと floor は話す順番みたいなもので、1人が他を無視してしゃべり続けると、こう言われるらしいです。
- side-swipe
v.) hit the side of a car
Swipe はさっとなでる感じ。車のミラーなど横の部分を接触し損傷する場合につかう。
The road was so narrow that when the truck passed, my car was side-swipped. あるいは my car got side-swipped.
- fender-bender
n. )dent in the fender; minor accident
車のフェンダーがまがる程度の軽い事故。
The road was icy and there are many fender benders.
- smack into
v.) collison, hit
こちらは、ひどめの衝突事故。突っ込む。横からぶつかる場合、正面の場合、いろいろ。
I didn't stop at a stop sign and somebody smacked into me.
He was backing up and smacked into the tree.
- total
v. completel ruin
これは完全崩壊的なダメージ。全部なくなる感じ。
There was a terrible accident. The car went into a telephone pole. It was totalled.
He was driving carelessly and totalled his car.
